Of earth, sea and air

Drawing on notions of performative incantations, this spirtual remix of Yusheng activates regional food materialities along with collective gestures and wish-making.

Made popular in the 1960s by settler immigrants, the ritual of Yusheng is tossed and eaten during Lunar New Year, with ingredients that symbolise wishes for prosperity, health, and harmony for the new year. The act is largely known as “Lo Hei” or “Lo Sang” depending on whether one is in Singapore or Malaysia!

This conjuration of Yusheng led by Annie Jael Kwan in collaboration with Jessie Jing as part of LUNAR LATE invites and engages audience members in this collective magical world-building.
